Paid Parental Leave – October 2022 announcement
The Federal Government has recently announced a plan to gradually increase paid parental leave entitlements. Impact HR understands how important it is for small to medium sized businesses to have early awareness of changes to support planning for their business. Here is a summary of the recently announced changes and key recommendations for business owners to prepare.
National Day of Mourning – Public Holiday
Due to the very sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II, there will be a one-off public holiday next Thursday 22 September 2022 as announced by the Prime Minister. Given the unavoidably late notice of this decision there will be some disruption and some of our clients are still coming to grips with the implications.
New mental health support available for small businesses and NSW businesses
Beyond Blue recently launched a new service to support Small Business Owners (with less than 20 employees), called NewAccess. NewAccess is a free and confidential mental health coaching program, developed by Beyond Blue to give small business owners, including sole traders the support they need. For larger businesses in NSW, the state government has collaborated with the Black Dog Institute offer free, expert led training and coaching for employers, leaders and employees of NSW businesses with less than 200 employees to support mental health in the workplace for a limited time.

The Federal Government recently announced possible changes to the Paid Parental Leave (PPL) scheme in 2023. Based on feedback from both sides of politics we anticipate these changes will be legislated.
Happy HR New Year – Tips for your business – immediate deductions
Businesses may be able to claim an immediate deduction for expenses through the temporary full expensing measure. This allows a business to claim an immediate deduction for new assets if they have a turnover of less than $5 billion, and for second-hand assets if the business has a turnover of less than $50 million. The assets must be first held, used or installed for use between 6 October 2020 and 30 June 2023.

For many small business owners and managers, the idea of workforce planning may be a little intimidating but workforce planning doesn’t need to be corporate, complex or cold. The reality is quite different and is just as important for a smaller business as it is for a big business – possibly even more important! In large organisations, you always have someone to cover a role and more than one person with the skills but in a SME life isn’t like that. We all have to wear multiple hats and often we are the only person with the qualifications for our role. In a SME it’s critical to have the right people with the right skills.
