Substitute Public Holidays in the Social and Community Services Award
Public holidays can now be substituted under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (Social and Community Services Award). This change follows a decision by the Fair Work Commission, the national workplace relations tribunal. It applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 11 September 2023.
Closing the Loop Bill delayed
The Closing the Loopholes Bill, introduced by Workplace Minister Tony Burke, has been pushed back in the Senate, with the opposition voting to extend the deadline for the findings of the report until February 2024. The Bill aimed to criminalise deliberate worker underpayment with hefty penalties. Australian Retailers Association CEO Paul Zahra praised the decision, highlighting concerns that the Bill in its current form would negatively impact workplace relations without productivity or any job benefits.
Small Business Month 1-31 October 2023
NSW Small Business Month is a month-long program created for small businesses across New South Wales to attend events aligned to their individual business interests. It’s all about providing an opportunity for small businesses to take the time to work on their business in October!
Coordinated by the NSW Small Business Commission, NSW Small Business Month brings together small businesses with local chambers, industry associations, other not-for-profits, large businesses, and all levels of government.

Working from home in Winter
How great is working from home? Being able to walk outside in the sunshine on a much needed break between meetings, having fresh air coming through the windows of your home office, hanging your washing on the line at lunch time to dry it in sun, its really wonderful for your mental health! But what happens during winter? When you can’t go on that lunchtime walk or you can’t have your window open because of all the rain and its cold and grey and miserable outside?
