What to consider when employing junior team members

The obligations related to hiring junior level employees has been a relevant topic in the media this year due to several high-profile breaches. Here at Impact HR, we understand the importance of paying fairly and equitably whilst also creating a safe and supportive work environment for your team.

Here are some important factors to consider when it comes to engaging junior employees:

  • Determine the award the employee is covered by
  • Once this is determined, check:
    • Age related requirements to understand the minimum terms and conditions of employment
    • Junior pay rates as indicated in the award and recently increased on 1 July 2023
    • Rest break requirements and any restrictions on hours such as taking into consideration school hours.
    • Any relevant allowance and additional requirements indicated in the award
  • Based on the industry and state you are based, we also recommend checking:
    • Minimum age requirements such as:
      • how old people need to be before they can start work
      • the type of work they can do
      • What hours they can work, especially if they are school age
    • If you plan to hire employees under the age of 18, be mindful that a Parent / guardian may also need to sign the Employment Agreement
    • Working with children requirements may be required for the team working with juniors
    • As an employer, you should also check if you need a special license to employ juniors
    • Health and safety, for some juniors this may be their first role. Ensure they understand their rights and responsibilities.

It is good practice to place birth date reminders in the payroll/HR system to ensure accurate and timely updates made according to age.
