Changes to General Retail Award will Benefit Students and Employers

7 December 2021

Changes to the General Retail Award are giving employers and students a sense of confidence and greater flexibility. Retailers have often struggled with compliance as all employees were required to work a minimum of 3 hour shifts, meaning that students who finished school and started work at 3:30pm need to be paid to 6:30pm even if their shift finished at 5:30pm due to the shop closing. The change, which is effective immediately, allows retailers to offer students a minimum shift of 1.5 hours. A wonderful Christmas present for retailers who have been doing it tough due to COVID closures and for students keen to gain experience and benefit financially from working convenient hours after school.
