KEEPING UP TO DATE

Award updates – checklist

28 June 2022

Award and minimum wage increase checklist

  1. Ensure the position description is up-to-date and accurately reflects the role.
  2. Use your industry and the position description to correctly determine the appropriate award for each of the positions.
  3. Determine the appropriate grade within the award for your positions, including any step increases which might be required for that grade. Eg: time in role, age of junior, qualifications gained.
  4. Compare the new award rates payable for the grades to the amount you are currently paying.

If the current rate being paid, is below the new minimum for that grade within the award:

  1. Check if you need to accommodate any allowances within the rate being paid, such as annual leave loading or first aid allowances.
  2. Increase the amount payable to at least the new award rate including if required additional allowances.
  3. Communicate any changes in writing with your team.

If the current rate being paid, is above the new minimum for that grade within the award:

  1. Check that this rate takes into account additional allowances as above.
  2. Consider if it is appropriate to also increase payments to those paid above the award rates at this time to ensure internal equity and fairness and ensure you retain talented employees*.
  3. Communicate any changes in writing with your team.
  4. Make changes as required within the payroll system for payment from the first pay period in July 2022
  5. Make sure you confirm any Superannuation changes that are legally required
  6. Download a new copy of the Fair Work Information Sheet and the Fair Work Casual Information Sheet and provide to all future employees.

*Recruitment, Onboarding and disruption to your business could cost you more than the increases.
