You Never Stop Communicating

“You Never Stop Communicating” is an often overlooked but critical step in communicating effectively as a leader is to remember that you are never not communicating.

It is not just about what we say and do, it’s also about what we don’t say and do. Effective leadership requires an awareness of both verbal and non-verbal communication. By mastering these, leaders can inspire, motivate, and build trust within their team.

Here are some types of communication to be aware of:

Verbal

  • Includes words spoken, text messages, emails and letters. Communication in leadership involves more than just choosing the right words. It is important to be aware of using clear and concise language to minimise misunderstandings. A consistent message with empathetic language fosters an environment of trust, collaboration and alignment.

Non-Verbal

  • Paralanguage: Such as tone, pitch, volume, and rhythm.  These factors can convey emotions and intentions beyond the literal meaning of words. It is important for leaders to be aware of how significantly it can alter the meaning of the message.
  • Body Language: Gestures, facial expressions, posture, and eye contact play crucial roles in expressing feelings and attitudes, often revealing more than spoken words.
  • Personal Space: The physical distance we maintain during interactions can indicate levels of intimacy, comfort, or dominance and is important to be aware of.

The skill of communicating effectively is complex. It requires conscious ongoing effort to check on the alignment of your verbal and non-verbal cues and also notice these in others and adapt accordingly.

As a leader it also requires you to be constantly reflecting on the message you want to be sending to your team to foster trust, inspire action, and create a positive and productive team environment. Remember, you are never not communicating—so make every interaction count.
