The Art of Delegation

The Art of Delegation

April 7, 2025

The art of delegation is one of the most powerful tools a leader has. However, knowing what to delegate and when can make the difference between success and frustration. When done correctly, it empowers teams, increases efficiency, and allows leaders to focus on high-level strategy. However, when done poorly it can lead to confusion, frustration, and decreased productivity.

Many leaders struggle with delegation, often feeling they could be delegating more or those that are delegating, face challenges with team members not delivering expected outcomes.

Effective delegation involves mindful requests, regular follow-ups, and adapting to different working styles.

The importance of mindful requests:

  • Consider if the request closely aligned with the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timebound) criteria, to ensure clarity, accountability and effectiveness.
  • Check their understanding, if they have capacity and commitment by using 2-way communication style
  • Align verbal and non-verbal cues to ensure your words and delivery align for clarity.
  • Be flexible based on their reasonable input.
  • Check and agree on training or mentoring if required to build confidence.
  • Clear on decision making authority. Setting these boundaries up front prevents confusion and ensures smooth execution.

Regular follow up

Regular check-ins ensure progress stays on track while offering support if needed.
