SIGNS ITS NOT WORKING

Signs it’s Not Working – And What to Do About It

September 16, 2024

Staying sane while running your business can feel like a challenge at times. Regardless of the size of your business, identifying the signs that the current way of working isn’t working for you, is essential to mental health. Yours and others in the team!

Our top 3 signs for when we need to do different things to get better results:

1.) Not Enough Time – Can AI help?

If I need data analysed or lots of information summarised, my first step is to go to my AI of choice. Impact HR’s AI policy means that we take out identifying information such as personal names, business names and identifiers etc., and then I let AI do the hard work. You can use the same information and ask different questions to understand how others will view the data. For example, by asking AI to focus on growth opportunities, or risks etc., I can see the same information through different lens.

These summaries, allow me to be laser focused on where to dig in deeper and what needs more research before I make recommendations to clients.

2.) Systems are Breaking

This could be that the business has outgrown the current system OR that you need to do a training refresh. Before you jump straight into building a new system or investing in new technology, take the time to ask questions and look at why the system has broken. If it is still fit for purpose, but we are not using it correctly, invest in training for the current one. There are times when the simplest solution is the best one.

However, there are times when due to growth or change we need a new system. If that is the case, get your key stakeholders together and work through the plan thoroughly. Sometimes it is best to slow down to go fast.

3.) Confusion Reigns

When we get busy, some leaders throw lots of resources at the same problem. This can result in a lack of clarity of who is doing what and how they are working together. Small short cuts to get a project started quickly can result in conflict and frustration later.

Taking time to delegate effectively and ensure there is a shared understanding will prevent the project failing. As the leader your role can be “stakeholder” and the team report back to you regularly. This gives you peace of mind, while you are also focused on other things.
