No one has ever chased me down a hall saying, “Can we please deep dive into our Safety Stats” or “I just can’t wait until our next Safety Meeting!” It is more likely the meeting that gets bumped for an unplanned sales call or an extra finance review. While I don’t take it personally, it does motivate me to make Safety exciting, in a good way.
At the end of the day, safety is about ensuring our teams get to spend time doing things that are valuable, required and enjoyable at work, so their personal life is filled with potential too.
So, what’s included in exciting Safety Stats?
Well, that depends on your industry and how long you’ve been focusing on safety.
Examples can include:
⁃ Days between accidents
⁃ Loss time incidents
⁃ Number of hazards identified (make sure these are divided into physical and psychological)
⁃ Number of hazards remediated
⁃ Number of safety training delivered
⁃ Number of safety/wellbeing initiatives delivered during the year
⁃ Initiative uptake ratio
⁃ Policy acknowledgement
⁃ Safety suggestions
Top Tips:
1. Gamification works: counting up from zero helps gamify the metrics; the higher the score the better your achievement and when we share them regularly no one wants to see the streak broken
2. Encourage everyone to be involved through competitions, surveys, quizzes
3. Use safety involvement as a stepping up to leadership platform. Every leader in the business needs safety awareness.
4. Prior year comparisons help management to remain focused and ensure adequate funding for safety activities.
One day, someone will chase me down the hall and I’ll be ready! Now I hope you will be too.
