An employee keeping records with title Record Keeping - Simply Essential

Record Keeping – Simply Essential

August 5, 2024

The start of each Financial Year is a time for many of us to set new goals. I often hear from clients “this year I’ll focus on compliance. I know it is important!” But as we are still busy running our business, the weeks creep by and suddenly we haven’t had time to get compliant.

Well, there is always next year, right?

Unfortunately, when it comes to HR compliance, you really can’t afford to push it into the “one day I’ll get around to it” pile.

Compliance Peace of Mind.

Payroll Record Keeping

As Employers we are required to keep a wide range of employment related records for 7 years including:

  • Time
  • Wages
  • Leave
  • Annualised Salary Agreements,
  • Flexibility Agreements,
  • Casual Conversion Offers, etc.

The penalty is even higher now as wage theft is a criminal offense.

Top Tip: If you don’t have a HRIS system to manage your leave requests that allows you to make comments, make sure you have store emails or photos/scans of paper-based communication. This is important for the dates and leave modifications. We’ve recently invested significant time tracking down and auditing conflicting records between an employee and employer to reach an outcome without going to Fair Work.

So, it is time to recommit to compliance

This could be your best year ever, but we need to get the foundations in place.
