Movember – Can’t Grow a Mo but still passionate about Movember

Why is this female founder so passionate about Men’s health and well-being? Because the well being of everyone in on our society and our businesses is important.

Some quick facts to get you thinking about the importance of men’s health:

Men are dying on average 6 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.
Prostate cancer rates are expected to double over the next 15 years.
Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among men aged 15-39 years of age and yet not talked about in the same way breast cancer is regularly discussed.
Across the world, one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 75% of all suicides.”

Businesses around the world are participating in Movember this month to increase awareness and raise funds to prevent our fathers, partners, brothers, friends, and work colleagues dying prematurely.

By working together to improve the health and wellbeing of men you’ll receive improved engagement, create a caring culture, and increase productivity across your business. No matter the size or gender type in your workforce, this is an initiative every business can participate in by promoting it. And while I can’t grow a mo, there are many ways to get involved with Movember this month including donating to someone else’s team, hosting an event and getting physically active to work on your own wellbeing.

Other actions you can take which cost you nothing but mean so much include:

Stop and take the extra time and show someone you really do care

How many times a day or week do you ask someone how they are going and really stop to take the time to listen to their response. Next time you ask, take a few minutes to really focus on how someone is doing, make eye contact (if appropriate – remember some introverts struggle with this), and take in their body language. Actively listen and engage with them.

Keep it top of mind

Movember is well recognised for its Moustache logo. What can your business do during this month of November to keep it top of mind? Can you add it to your logo, decorate your staff notice boards, put photos of the growing Mo team in the kitchen? It’s a symbol that we all know, and it helps to keep men’s health top of mind.

Equip everyone with resources

It doesn’t matter how often you may check in with someone and ask how they are doing, sometimes they might just not want to talk about their feelings and what is going on in their lives, particularly in the workplace. However, we all have the ability to share resources and knowledge by having information about where everyone can seek help.
