Making Spaces for Wellness

When we think about wellbeing and making spaces for wellness at work, we often picture policies, programs, or team culture. But the spaces we work in both physical and virtual play just as big a role in how supported, energised, and connected employees feel. Whether employees are in the office or working remotely, creating spaces that support their wellness doesn’t have to be complicated. Often, it’s the little touches that make the biggest difference.

Here are some ideas to consider:

Greenery

Plants do more than brighten up a desk. They can actually reduce stress, improve mood, and boost focus. Studies show that workplaces with plants see lower absenteeism and higher productivity. Plants also help clean the air by filtering toxins, creating a healthier environment overall. Even a few small potted plants can make a noticeable difference in how calm and inviting a workspace feels.

Light

Exposure to natural light helps regulate circadian rhythms, improving sleep quality and energy levels. It can increase alertness, reduce fatigue, and lift mood, all of which makes employees more engaged and productive. For offices with limited sunlight, positioning desks near windows or scheduling outdoor breaks can have a real positive impact.

Pets

Many businesses are exploring pet-friendly policies, and it’s easy to see why. Pets can lower stress, spark social interaction, and add a bit of joy to the day. Even if animals can’t be in the office, “pet moments” in online meetings can still bring warmth and connection. Spending time with animals has been shown to release oxytocin and reduce cortisol, giving a genuine boost to mood and overall wellbeing.

Sound

Noise can affect focus and stress more than we realise. Quiet zones, background music, or even white noise apps can help employees feel more productive, depending on their personal needs and preferences. Managing sound supports mental clarity, improves concentration, and reduces fatigue from constant auditory distractions, helping employees feel calmer and more focused throughout the day.

Remote Spaces

Working from home has its perks, but it’s easy for boundaries to blur. Encourage your employees to create a designated workspace, even if it’s just a corner of a room. Good lighting and making time for movement are small but powerful ways to protect wellbeing. Encouraging virtual coffee breaks can also replicate the casual social connection of an office.

Personal Touches

Allowing employees to personalise their workspace with photos, artwork, or meaningful items helps people feel more comfortable, settled, and engaged.

Inclusive Spaces

A workplace that truly supports wellness is one where everyone feels safe, comfortable, and included. This can look like:

  • Quiet rooms for decompressing, refocusing, or managing sensory overload.
  • Neurodiversity-friendly design, with different workstations: collaborative, quiet, flexible, to suit varied working styles.
  • Accessibility features, like adjustable desks, clear signage, and supportive technology for different needs.

When inclusivity is built into the work environment, it sends a clear message: wellbeing is for everyone, not just a select few.

Wellbeing at work isn’t just about programs or policies, it’s about the everyday environments we create, both in the office and at home. From greenery and natural light to pets, sound management, and personalised or inclusive spaces, these small but thoughtful touches can make a big difference in mood, focus, and overall engagement. By paying attention to how your employees experience their surroundings, business owners can build workspaces that truly support everyone, helping teams feel energised, connected, and ready to thrive.
