8 Steps for a Memorable Interview

March 10, 2025

Can interviews be enjoyable?

In a candidate-tight environment, making sure your candidates love and remember their experience with you is essential in attracting and securing the best people. Interviews can be nerve-wracking for candidates, but they don’t have to be. When conducting interviews, creating a relaxed and enjoyable environment leads to better conversations, clearer insights, a more positive experience for both parties and ultimately you, finding the best candidate for your business. Here are some vital tips to make interviews more engaging and comfortable.

Brief Candidates Ahead of Time

You can reduce interview anxiety by sharing key details in advance – lack of surprise builds confidence

  • Send through the position description (PD).
  • Share additional company details and role basics not covered in the PD.
  • Explain the interview format, including questions, tests, panel size, and panel members.
  • Provide logistical tips for on-site interviews, such as directions and parking.
  • Send the meeting request promptly for online interviews and advise candidates to test their audio and camera.

Set a Warm Tone from the Start

First impressions count. Start with a friendly greeting and light small talk – “How’s your day going?” or a casual comment on the weather, ask how their weekend was. A little warmth eases nerves and builds connection.

Choose a Comfortable Setting

If the interview is in person, opt for a quiet, well-lit space with comfortable seating. If it’s virtual, ensure both parties have a good internet connection and minimal background distractions. A relaxed setting makes the conversation feel more natural rather than rigid and overly formal.

Be Clear About Expectations

At the beginning of the interview, outline what to expect. Let the candidate know how long the interview will take, what topics you’ll cover, and whether there will be a Q&A at the end. Transparency helps ease anxiety.

Make It a Conversation, Not an Interrogation

The best interviews feel like conversations rather than one-sided questioning. Engage in active listening, ask open-ended questions, and encourage candidates to elaborate on their experiences. Share insights about the company and role naturally, rather than reading from a script. And use humour where appropriate!

Allow for Breaks in the Conversation

Don’t rush—give candidates time to think for more thoughtful answers. Natural pauses make the conversation feel relaxed. Reassure them they can ask for repeats or take their time.

Encourage a Two-Way Conversation

Let candidates know they can “interview” you too—this helps them feel more in control and at ease – invite questions.

End on a Positive Note

Wrap up the interview with a warm thank you and let the candidate know what to expect next. A friendly closing remark, such as “It was great getting to know you, and I appreciate your time today,” leaves a lasting positive impression.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure a more enjoyable experience for both you and the candidate, leading to better outcomes for your business. If the candidate feels comfortable, they can show you their real selves allowing you to choose the very best candidate.
